For 99 cents, you can purchase the app Jump Desktop, a simple-to-use RDP and VNC client for remotely connecting to Windows and Mac machines from Android (and iOS) devices. It's got native security, console session logins for accessing Windows Server machines and decent touch gesturing support in remote OS desktops. It's a great idea; however, some buggy behavior like crashing and unresponsiveness to some gestures makes the app feels as though it needs a bit more fine-tuning for the Android platform.

Installation
Jump Desktop is a two-part install. You download the app from the Android Market for your device and download and install the Jump Desktop client for any PC or Mac you want to connect to remotely. The real configuration is with the desktop install.? Users have two options to install: automatic and manual. Selecting "Automatic" invokes a wizard that guide you through the very short install process. It first asks in which mode to set Jump Desktop: RDP or VNC. Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is Microsoft's native Windows technology for accessing one Windows machine from another. VNC is a protocol for the same purpose, except it's platform-independent and used often for Linux.? RDP is recommended for connection to Windows machines particularly because RDP is built into Windows. VNC provides screen sharing and uses SSL. For testing, I selected RDP.

The wizard then configures remote desktop and network settings. A screen pops up requesting the user to enter Google account credentials. Jump Desktop uses Google's servers to connect a device to a remote machine across the Internet. You can circumvent Google if the Android device and remote machine are on the same wireless LAN. You can also connect to work machines if you already have a VPN client on your device. It?s just a matter of connecting to the VPN to get access into the corporate network and then using Jump Desktop to connect to a specific machine.

Once Jump Desktop authenticates the Google account, the client is up and running on the PC or Mac. The Jump Desktop windows gives several settings options?Launch Viewer, which brings up the Google login window, Configuration Viewer, which allows changing between VNC and RDP mode, User and Computer, which provides information such as the computer name, IP address and user name, Logs?which tracks connection activity and Advanced Options. This allows users to enable or disable RDP and VNC and change port assignments.

Security and Compatibility
Jump Desktop encrypts connections by default. All RDP connections are supported including 40/56/128-bit RDP and TLS/SSL and FIPS.? The app has been tested to work with TightVNC, RealVNC, UltraVNC and Ubuntu Remote Desktop.
